ARCHITECTURE AND THE ARCHITECT
ARCHITECTURE AND THE ARCHITECT
Publisher: Do Not Design
The book “Architecture and the Architect” constitutes an extensive project by Singapore-based group Do Not Design to explore the memories and feelings that architecture can evoke and how the dialogue between architecture and its users plays out.
The book concentrates on forty diverse buildings in Singapore built over four decades – shopping malls, offices, government agencies, public and residential housing – and offers detailed insight from Singapore-based architects as well as anecdotes and memories collected from local residents, shopkeepers and workers to form a collective, encompassing overview with objective and subjective standpoints.
“An intimate project, this publication arises out of an anxiety towards the fast-changing built landscape of Singapore. Its objective is to look at place, memory and nostalgia through architecture, while attempting to understand the images of Singapore in the collective minds. How do we, as agents and recipients of the built environment, come together to decide the landscape that generations after our own would inherit?” (from the publisher’s description)
