Ryoji AKIYAMA
秋山亮二
Born 1942. Born in Tokyo, Japan. Father is photographer Celadon Akiyama. After graduating from Waseda University, Faculty of Letters, he worked for the Associated Press and the Asahi Shimbun newspaper's photography department before becoming a freelance photographer. Actively covered and published articles from a photojournalist's point of view on issues such as famine in India and depopulation of remote islands. Participated in international exhibitions such as ‘New Japanese Photography’ at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, together with Masahisa Fukase, Daido Moriyama and others. He has also held a solo exhibition ‘Ryoji Akiyama Photography’ (Rice University, Houston), where he photographed people's lives using a 6x6 twin-lens reflex camera. He has created his own unique world view through his works that capture the subject matter in a straightforward manner from the ‘traveller's point of view’ in New York, Indonesia, China and elsewhere. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography; Miyagi Museum of Art; Kure Municipal Museum of Art; Kawasaki City Museum, among others. Collections of his works include Tsugaru: Ryoji Sensei Gyojoki (Tsugaru Shobo), New York Tsushin (Makisuisha), Naragawa-mura (Naragawa Village) (Asahi Shimbunsha) and Nara (Nara) (Yuushinbo). His translations include The American Century 1900-1910: The Dawn of the 20th Century (Seibu Time), and his essays include Kemuri the Fan (Lawyer).
