The South Manchuria Railway Co. After the victory in the Russo-Japanese War, the South Manchurian Branch of the Eastern Qing Railway and its branch lines were transferred from Russia to Japan under the Treaty of Portsmouth signed in 1905, and the company was established in 1906 as a semi-private corporation with the purpose of managing railroad operations and auxiliary businesses. The company has developed into an important player in Japan's Manchurian economic strategy.
