Though published in 2022, the images that compose Kathryn McCool’s debut photobook “P.North” were originally taken in the 1980s and 1990s in rural parts of Australia and New Zealand. Straightforward in technique and composition, McCool’s photographs—mostly portraits, with the occasional landscape shot—nevertheless exude a mystery, a sense of something beyond the visible realm. The images seem uncoupled from the specific time and place in which they were created. They possess a weight and a presence that rewards sustained looking, with small (but decisive) details making themselves known bit by bit.
