DARK CITIES Trilogy
“Dark Cities,” Shyue Woon’s trilogy of withered fringe spaces in Asian megacities, creates a gloomy portrait of forgotten futures in Singapore, Tokyo and Seoul.
By visiting outdated or obsolete architectural spaces – a carpark in Singapore for volume 1, a futuristic 1970s tower in Tokyo for volume 2, and a fading district in Seoul for volume 3 – Woon isolates and distills aspects of each city that have been overtaken by time. Himself an architect, Woon understands the meaning of architecture as manifested visions and permanent records of single points in time. By adding fictitious elements to his explorations, he invites new associations and imaginations to form within his photographs.
Essays by Charmaine Poh (volume 1), Kenji Takazawa (volume 2), and Rachel Ng (volume 3) add further context to Woon’s work (each text included in English translation).
