Born in 1953 in Yamagata, Japan, Noriko Shibuya is a Japanese photographer who worked within some of the most influential artistic circles of her time. In 1974, she graduated from the Tokyo Polytechnic University (Junior College Department) before joining the WORKSHOP photography school in Tokyo in 1975. Founded by Shomei Tomatsu, this school brought together major figures in photography such as Nobuyoshi Araki, Masahisa Fukase, Eikoh Hosoe, and Daido Moriyama, whose teachings deeply influenced her work. From 1976 to 1982, she became the first female photographer to join the CAMP gallery, one of Japan’s first independent photography galleries. At the same time, she pursued her personal projects, collaborated with the press, and contributed to cinematic works. In 1983-1984, she notably photographed the director Takeshi Kitano for the press. Her body of work, discreet yet significant, reflects a unique perspective on the world around her.
