Born in Shimane Prefecture in 1952, he is a graduate of the “Daido Moriyama Workshop,” a terakoya-style workshop and photography school planned and led by Shomei Higashimatsu in the 1970s. The Daido Moriyama School was the class that sent out Keizo Kitajima and Seiji Kurata, who later became Japan's leading photographers, and these photographers dissipated their energy in the independent gallery space called “CAMP. Nariai, too, has been active for a long time by continuously presenting solo exhibitions and photo books based in his hometown, and published “空を見上げた日” (2006), “松江風景” (2008), and “遙かなる河” (2015) from Sokyu-sha, which is headed by Michitaka Ota.
